The surgical repair of atrial septal defects (Bailey et al., 1953; Gross et al., 1953; Bjork et al., 1954) has led to a greater awareness of the anatomy of the right atrium. In two cases of this condition we have seen an important variant involving the valve of the inferior vena cava. This structure was described by Bartolomeno Eustachius (1563), but its identity was denied by Bauhin (1605) and not mentioned by Harvey (1628). Winslow (1717) produced the first accurate description of the valve and suggested its fcetal function.
